Kathmandu Orphanage

Childrens Orphanage – Kathmandu
Our Kathmandu Orphanage has been among Dooley-Intermed’s most active projects.
Our Foundation began providing support in 2007 at a time when the situation was truly desperate. The Orphanage was then two months behind in their rent, on the verge of being evicted and releasing the kids into the streets. The children were sleeping on straw mats on bare floors, had tattered clothing, non-existent healthcare, minimal opportunities for school, very little food, and were actually cooking over a wood fire in the back yard as they had no money to purchase cooking gas. Dooley-Intermed stepped in to provide critical support for food and rent and clothing. Dooley volunteer doctors have twice provided comprehensive health checkups and a Dooley-Intermed team Ophthalmologist provided eye checkups for all students and staff. There is a local Children’s Hospital nearby for any urgent medical needs.
Dooley-Intermed is currently providing the rent payments as well as primary living expenses such as food, fuel and clothing for this incredible group of otherwise destitute children who would have been left alone to wander the dangerous and filthy streets of Kathmandu.
Presently there are 2 rooms housing boys, 1 housing girls, and 1 housing staff. In this small space there are 39 children, (28 boys, 11 girls) plus 5 staff and 2 newborns (staff babies). The current situation unfortunately requires most of the kids to sleep 2 to a bed as there is simply not enough physical space to accommodate more beds.
The Future –
A New Orphanage Building and Eco-Farm for the children!
A miracle is in the making. Dooley-Intermed is determined to help these kids on an ongoing basis, and your contributions are making their dreams come true. Recognizing the problems with the current situation, we initiated a major plan with our Nepal based Dooley-Intermed affiliate, Mission Himalaya, to relocate the Orphanage to a rural area located about 50 km. from Kathmandu, in a beautiful rural area with clean air and water. The location we selected is near the village of Dhulikiel, located in easy walking distance from two local schools, and a local health post. By combining our resources with several other organizations, we enabled the recent purchase of land and have begun construction. Our goal is to create a brand new dedicated Orphanage complete with proper dorm rooms and bathrooms, a meeting hall, and an adjoining modest “eco-farm” with outdoor space for an extensive vegetable garden etc. Construction is underway! Please check our “Highlights & Updates” web page for progress reports and pictures as this magnificent dream becomes a reality over the coming months.
